Assam youth infected with COVID-19 kills self

NAGAON, April 11 - One Jahirul Islam from Singimari Teromile village near Paschim Salpara under Rupahihat police station, who was kept in quarantine in a hospital at Akola in Maharashtra after being confirmed with COVID-19 positive, committed suicide today by slitting his neck inside the hospital.

The 35-year-old youth had attended the Nizamuddin Markaz congregation recently and thereafter went to Akola on missionary purposes.

He along with some other Markaz attendees took shelter in a mosque there. Significantly, amid the ongoing nationwide lockdown, he was deserted by his companions for mysterious reasons. Getting no other option, Jahirul finally on Friday last approached the Maharashtra Police that immediately made arrangements for his medical test and admitted in a hospital.

But when his medical report confirmed that he was infected with the novel coronavirus this morning, losing mental balance he took the ultimate decision to end his life, sources said.

Jahirul talked to his family over phone last night and during the conversation, he was reportedly upset and afraid of catching the infection, sources added.

The youth�s body was being kept in the hospital morgue till the filing of this report. The Maharashtra Police has contacted the Nagaon police in this regard and informed about the incident.
