Assam win five sports climbing medals

GUWAHATI, Nov 2 � Assam bagged five medals in the 16th IMF North East Zone Sports Climbing Competition which concluded at the 4th AP Battalion Campus, Kahilipara here yesterday.

The Assam Rock and Sports Climbing Association (ARSCA) in association with NE Zone Sports Climbing Committee, under the aegis of Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi, organised the event.

The championship was held in all three categories-Men/women, junior boys/girls and sub-junior boys/girls. Three events of Speed, Lead and Bouldering were conducted in the three-day meet.

A total number of 96 climbers from the North Eastern States Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Assam, Sikkim, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh took part in the event.

Manipur bagged the best team trophy with highest medals followed by Mizoram in second position.

For the first time, Assam climbers bagged five medals in total in Speed, Lead and Bouldering in women open and sub-junior boys and girls events. The medal winners from Assam are: Nitu Basumatary (women open), Matthews John Marak (sub-junior boys) and Mousumi Das (sub-junior girls). Nitu won two silver and one bronze medals and both Matthews and Mousumi won one silver medals each.

State Sports Minister Ajit Singh, MLA and president of ARSCA Durlabh Chamuwa, top police officers Pradeep Kumar, RM Singh, Jyotirmoy Chakraborty, Bipul Pathak and veteran mountaineers Ajit Kalita and Kanak Deka attended the closing function and handed over the prizes.
