Assam varsity students protest rhino killings

SILCHAR, Feb 10 � The students of Assam University Silchar staged a protest recently against the killing of rhinos in different protected areas of the State. More than 200 students including faculties from various departments participated in this protest movement. Also, a signature drive �Save Rhino� was carried out along with a memorandum which will be sent to both the State and Central governments. Debnath said that other universities and students must also raise their voice for rhino protection.

Dipankar Debnath, a research scholar at the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science said that the student and teaching fraternity of the varsity thoroughly condemn the failure of the authorities to provide protection to the rhinoceros which fall easy prey to the intruding poachers frequently. Among the faculty members, Prof Abhik Gupta, Dean, School of Environmental Sciences, Dr Susmita Gupta, Dr Hillol Jyoti Singha, Dr Ajit Kr Das, Dr M Gangabhusan, Prof Biman Kr Dutta (ex- dean) took part in the protest rally along with the students which began from the university gate.

�We need more awareness and activeness in our society regarding raising of the issue to protect the one-horned rhino, which is endemic to this area only,� Prof Abhik Gupta said during the protest.
