Assam Valley Literary Award to HN Dutta

GUWAHATI, Dec 31 � Renowned poet and Sahitya Akademi Award winner Hirendra Nath Dutta has been chosen for the prestigious 25th Assam Valley Literary Award for the year 2014.

�The award honours this eminent writer with a lifetime achievement award, which will be formally presented to Hirendra Nath Dutta at a function in Guwahati in March 2015,� a press release from the Williamson Magor Educational Trust said.

Born at Titabor in 1937, Dutta has to his credit, several collections of poems � Somdhirir Sovvarani Aru Ananya Kavita (1981), Manuha Anukule (2000), Pal Anupalar Anch (2007), etc., and two collections of critical essays � Nirbasito Xomalosana (2011) and Mor Prabandha (2014). He has also edited an anthology of Assamese poetry � One Hundred Years of Assamese Poetry (2007).

Dutta�s poetry is marked by unusual and impressive, density of form, and his own characteristic poetic diction that manages to project the tremor and confusions of the present age without being cynical.

Recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award in 2004 and Padmanath Vidya Vinod Smriti Sahitya Puraskar in 2013, Dutta has participated in the Kabi Bharati Poet's Conference at Bhopal in 1987 and several Poet's Conferences held at New Delhi, Bangalore, and Calcutta organized by Sahitya Akademi.

The Williamson Magor Education Trust was formed with the purpose of giving an impetus to education and cultural progress within the State. The award, which is part of the trust's endeavour to preserve and promote the rich literary heritage of Assam, was institutionalized in the year 1990.
