GUWAHATI, March 25 � Assam upset fancied Bengal in their opening match of the East Zone Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 Cricket Tournament by 18 runs.
Put into bat at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack today, Assam posted a challenging total of 189 for the loss of six wickets. Sib Sankar Roy top scored with 48 while seasoned J Syed Mohammad added 35. Useful contributions came from the bats of Pallab Das (25), Amit Sinha and Sarupam Purkayastha (24 each).
The Bengal batsmen, studded with leading players like Manoj Tiwari, Wriddhiman Saha, skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla etc., failed to chase down the target and managed to score 171 for the loss of nine wickets. Debabrata Baidya Das was their lone batsman to put some resistance with a 59-ball 78.
