Assam University VC set to resign

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, May 13 Assam University Vice Chancellor Prof Somnath Dasgupta has decided to resign from his post.

Claiming that this move to relinquish office is strictly on personal grounds, the Vice Chancellor made it clear that the pronouncement is absolutely his own and he has no issues against the varsity or its fraternity.

Expressing my wish to resign, I have sent my resignation letter to the secretary of the Union HRD Ministry and this is sternly based on my personal reasons. If the MHRD allows me, I shall leave. There is nothing against the university or anybody else, the Vice Chancellor said. However, Prof Dasgupta did say that he has been occasionally troubled by ill health, which according to him has contributed to his decision to resign.

Interestingly, his decision to step down comes at a time when the university is shrouded with questions on Maoist activities involving some of its faculty members and students. Asked whether the Maoist issue could be a reason behind his sudden call to quit, Prof Dasgupta said, The decision has not been taken overnight. I have some personal reasons which I have to address and I had thought about my resignation some time ago. It is unfortunate that the unrelated events have coincided.

Prof Dasgupta, an acclaimed scientist, joined Assam University in 2012.
