GUWAHATI, March 6: The Assam Tribune has emerged victories in the team event (men) of badminton in the annual TOPCEM ASJA Inter-Media Sports Festival that started today.

Assam Tribune defeated Pratidin Time 2-1 in the matches played at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium in the RG Baruah Sports Complex. In the final (singles) Rituraj Borthakur of Assam Tribune outclassed Gokul Gogoi of Pratidin Time 22-8 while Tribune’s Sivasish Thakur went down to Chanakya Hazarika of Pratidin Time 13-21.

The pair, however, got better of Pratidin Time's duo in the doubles 21-10 to make it 2-1.

Sivasish again excelled in the men’s singles as he defeated Chanakya 16-14, 15-10 to clinch the title. In the women's singles, Rimpal Rajkumari of Doordarshan thrashed her colleague Sarbani Bardhan 15-4.

On Sunday, the table tennis events will be played at the same venue from 10 am.

The annual event, aimed at promotion of fitness and brotherhood among journalists of Assam, will also include chess and seven-a-side football.
