Assam tops domestic tourists in NE

SHILLONG, Nov 2 � More domestic tourists visited Assam among the Northeastern States between the period 2007-2009 but Sikkim was the favourite among the eight States for foreign visitors, reports PTI.

Altogether 38,50,521 domestic and 14,942 foreign tourists visited Assam during the period, according to a Ministry of Tourism report.

Arunachal Pradesh recorded 1,95,147 domestic and 3,945 foreign tourists during the three years, while 5,91,398 domestic and 4,522 foreign tourists visited Meghalaya.

Sikkim recorded 5,47,810 domestic and 17,730 foreign tourists while Mizoram saw 56,651 domestic and 513 foreign tourists.

Despite being one of the most disturbed States in the country, Manipur saw 1,24,229 domestic and 337 foreign tourists during the period, while Nagaland witnessed 20,953 domestic and 1,423 foreign visitors.

Tripura recorded 3,17,541 domestic and 4,246 foreign tourists during the period.

Newmai News adds: The Union Ministry of Tourism has sanctioned various projects in the Northeastern States in the past three years.

The projects sanctioned are: Sikkim - 72 projects at a cost of Rs 162.15 crore, Nagaland � 48 projects at a cost of Rs 72.65 crore, Arunachal Pradesh � 41 projects at a cost of Rs 111.21 crore, Tripura � 32 projects at a cost of Rs 35.93 crore, Manipur � 25 projects at a cost of Rs. 73.44 crores, Mizoram � 18 projects at a cost of Rs 44.53 crore, Assam and Meghalaya 15 projects each at a cost of Rs 44.55 crore and Rs 33.86 crore respectively.

Implementation of the projects sanctioned is the responsibility of the concerned State Governments. The Ministry reviews the progress made in regard to implementation from time to time.
