Assam top east zone powerlifting meet

IMPHAL, April 26 � Lifters from Assam bagged the maximum number of gold medals on the concluding day of the three-day Eastern India Powerlifting Championship here on Sunday. With 7 gold medals, 2 silver and as many bronze medals, the 16-member Assam team bagged the top position in the medal tally.

The gold winning male lifters of Assam are Anurag Bharali (105kg), Biky Sharma (53kg), Ranjan Mazumdar (59kg), Abhijit Das (66kg), Azad Befare (74kg) while the gold medal winner female lifters are Upama Rai (63kg) and Moushumi (84kg).

With 6 gold medals, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals, Manipur got second place. West Bengal got the third position with 2 gold medals. Mizoram team bagged 4 silver and 4 bronze medals while Gauhati University team lifters got 2 silver and one bronze medals. Arunachal Pradesh�s lone gold medal winner was Ch Soniya (52kg). The six gold medal winners of host team Manipur include Md Amin Khan (83kg), Sh Reene (girls 43kg), N Romala (girls 47kg), K Homeshori (girls 57kg), Leima Chanu (girls 72kg) and K Roshida (girls 84kg).

The championship which was organised by All Manipur Powerlifting Association under the supervision of Indian Powerlifting Federation, was participated by 120 players from six States-Mizoram, Assam, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Guwahati University in addition to host Manipur.

N Kumar Meitei, president of Manipur Powerlifting Association; Sunil Elangbam, secretary of Manipur Olympic Association and Inspector General of Police S Manglemjao attended the closing function and distributed the medals and prizes.
