GUWAHATI, June 6 - In a bid to create awareness on growing pollution in sea water due to indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste, a three-member deep sea diving team from Assam collected plastic waste from the seabed in the Arabian Sea off Goa as part of the World Environment Day celebrations.
The team comprised Vikramjit Kakati, Angshuman Deb and Sanjay. The programme was organised under the aegis of Scuba Evolution Goa.
�We collected several kilograms of plastic waste but the campaign was a symbolic one to draw the attention of the masses to the growing hazard of pollution of sea and ocean waters across the world. Much of the plastic waste that people throw casually into the rivers ultimately gets accumulated on the seabed. It is causing irreparable damage to the sea ecology and varied sea life forms. Coral reefs which act as the much-needed fish habitat are also getting depleted because of waste accumulation,� said Kakati who is an associate professor in Mechanical Engineering and administrative officer of Assam Don Bosco University.
