GUWAHATI, Oct 23 - After a shock defeat against Orissa in their previous Group A Ranji Trophy match at Cuttack, Assam bounced back with an encouraging show against host Vidarbha with a 52-run first innings lead.
On the second day of the four-day match at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Jamtha, Nagpur today, in reply to Assam first innings total of 206, the host team was all out for 154. In the second innings Assam were 36 for the loss of two wickets. Captain Gokul Sharma and Amit Verma were at the crease with 3 and 5 respectively.
Studded with top players like Washim Zafar, Subramaniam Badrinath, Umesh Yadav etc, the Vidarbha batsmen could not tackle the Assam bowling as barring Ganesh Satish (67) and Test discard W Jaffer (40) other batsmen failed to score satisfactorily.
Sarupam Purkayastha, the hero of the last season, hit form after dry spells in previous matches. He took four wickets and remained highest wicket taker. Amit Verma was the other leading wicket taker with three victims.
Earlier, Assam opted to bat first and scored 206 in the first innings with J Syed Mohammad being the top scorer (69 off 139 balls, 4X7). Amit Verma was the other leading scorer with 117-ball 57. He hit 9 boundaries and a six. KB Arun Karthik (35) and Kunal Saikia (24) had some useful contributions.
