By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 26 - Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha observed the Indigenous Peoples Black Day at Bhogpur in Lakhimpur district on February 24 to remind the indigenous people of the State of the sad development of the State losing its independent entity 192 years back through the Yandaboo Treaty. The Yandaboo Treaty was signed on February 24, 1826 by the British colonialists with the Burmese authorities, which resulted in the colonial subjugation of Assam for over 121 years.

The Mahasangha said in a statement here that it observed the black day at Bhogpur in association with the Deuri Sangram Samiti.

Hoisting the black flag on the occasion, Mahasangha working president Matiur Rahman spoke at length as to how the indigenous peoples of the State have become minorities in their native land and have thus been losing all their rights to the migrants.

If the indigenous peoples of the State fail to rise in a full-fledged rebellion, they are sure to meet their doom, he warned.

On the occasion, Mahasangha general secretary Purnanada Rabha hoisted the Mahasangha flag, while tributes were paid to the martyrs of the anti-colonial struggle of the States people by Deuri Sangram Samiti president GR Pradip Deuri with a symbolic sound of firing of a cannon.

The function was presided over by advisor to the Thengal Kachari Jatiya Sangathan Dinanath Bora. It was also addressed by Sadou Chutiya Jati Sanmilan secretary Haren Chutiya, secretary of the Ahom Sabhas Lakhimpur district committee Suren Bora and advocate Ratul Saikia, among others.
