GUWAHATI, Jan 7 - Lower order batsmen saved the day for Assam as they managed to gather 175 in their first innings in the Elite Group C Ranji Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh at Kanpur today.
Put in to bat, Assam were in neck-deep trouble losing five wickets with the team�s total reading 27. But some courageous batting by lower order batsmen Pallav Das (75), Sarupam Purkayastha (35) and Jitumoni Kalita (23) lifted Assam to a respectable position. Assam top order miserably failed to tackle the situation as they started losing wickets from the initial stage. At stumps, UP were 64 for the loss of one wicket.
