Assam Ranji team accorded warm reception

GUWAHATI, Feb 21 � The Assam Ranji team which arrived here this evening after their quarterfinal match against defending champions Karnataka, was given a warm reception by the members of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) led by secretary Bikash Baruah and official Pradip Buragohain.

Karnataka entered the semifinal with a first innings lead as the five-day match ended in a draw at Indore yesterday.

In the second innings, chasing an imposing target of 683, Assam finished the final day at 338 for four. Gokul Sharma was the hero of Assam�s second innings with an unbeaten 127.

In the preliminary stage, Assam finished top in group C with 35 points from eight outings. Assam won five matches while drew two against one loss.

It is the best ever performance by Assam team in Ranji Trophy. Local boy Sarupam Purkayastha became one of the most sensational bowlers of the season with 36 wickets. Batsmen like Tarjinder Singh (523 runs), Pallav Das (483 runs), Gokul Sharma (390 runs) helped the State team with some responsible batting through out the season. Tarjinder (119) and Gokul (127 n.o) scored two centuries.

The ACA president Gautam Roy congratulated the team and announced Rs 10,000 to Gokul for his century against Karnataka. Secretary Baruah revealed that due to some pre-season planning the team got the success. He also lauded the show of the players and hoped in the coming seasons the sons of the soil will do much better in Ranji and other BCCI domestic championships.
