Assam prohibits inter-state passenger vehicles

GUWAHATI, March 22 - To contain the outbreak of coronavirus, Transport Department has prohibited inter-state passenger vehicles to and from Assam till March 31.

However, goods vehicles, personal vehicles, vehicles used for essential emergency services and vehicles on government duty have been exempted.

Bus services have been suspended across the State including city buses till Tuesday as a preventive measure to curb spread of coronavirus.

However government buses will ply but not in full strength.

All Assam Motor Transport Association (AAMTA) secretary general Pradip Das said that all buses have been barred from operating till March 24 and would resume services on March 25.

The Transport Department had also directed city bus associations and other public transport associations to ply 50 per cent buses in rotation till further orders.

Online App-based taxis will ply from tomorrow.

President of All Assam Cab Operators' Union Ismail Ali said that only shared taxi services will not be available, other services will remain available from Monday.

Moreover, during the Janata curfew today, the Transport Department had made arrangements for facilitating the smooth movement of those passengers who arrived at the airports and railway stations by providing around 80 vehicles for transporting them to respective destinations.

Arrangements are also being made at ISBT, Betkuchi for sending the passengers to other districts after 9 pm tonight after their proper screening by Health Department officials.
