GUWAHATI, Nov 8 - Assam tasted maiden victory this Ranji season as they defeated last year�s finalist Saurashtra by nine wickets.
Assam medium pacers Arup Das and his Barpeta compatriot Krishna Das took full advantage of the pace-friendly Eden Gardens wicket in Kolkata and wrecked the Saurashtra innings capturing five and four wickets respectively.
Saurashtra were bundled out for 81 and requiring 64 runs for victory, Assam reached the target in 15.4 overs. Rishav Das and Sib Sankar Roy remained unbeaten with 30 and 24 respectively. Rahul Hazarika was out for 8.
Saurashtra resumed their second innings this morning on a disappointing note losing wickets at regular intervals. The three pronged Assam pace attack, including Abu Nechim Ahmed, proved to be fatal for Saurashtra as their batsmen found it too hot to handle. Only three batsmen � Amitoze Singh (30), SP Jackson (13) and DA Jadeja (12) could reach double figures while five batsmen even failed to open their accounts.
Arup and Krishna were in such a splendid form today that they outshone Saurashtra�s Jaydev Unadkat who took six wickets in Assam�s first innings.
Arup came out with a 12-wicket match haul while Krishna took six wickets.
With this victory Assam leapfrogged to the sixth spot in the nine-team group with 7 points from five matches.
In the next match, Assam will play against Maharashtra at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai from November 21.
