GUWAHATI, June 26 - The Assam Police has decided to upgrade its armament with next-generation weapons on the lines of National Security Guards (NSG), the countrys most potent counter-terrorism wing.

As part of its upgrading process, the Assam Police headquarters is going to write to the Director General of the NSG to share detail profile of the lethal weapons that are currently being used by the Special Action Group (SAG) and the Special Ranger Group (SRG).

The NSG commandos are currently using the best assault weapons available. We would ask the NSG chief to share the information based on which we will procure the new generation weapons for our force, sources told The Assam Tribune.

In fact, the NSG is in possession of the most sophisticated precision-guided weapons. These can prove to be very handy weapons for our assault team as well, when it comes to counter-terrorism operations, sources asserted.

Sources said that the idea is to be futuristic and match the best in business in terms of its firepower. Once the new line of weaponry is procured, we also plan to organise special training camps for our men under experts supervision, sources added. A top Assam Police official, when contacted, confirmed the development, saying that the upgrade of the weaponry was necessitated keeping in view the use of sophisticated weapons by militant groups in the State. He said in some recent incidents of ambush and encounters in the region, ample evidence of outlawed groups using modern rifles has come to light.

Outfits like the ULFA and NDFB too are in possession of new generation German-made weapons, as was evident in the cases like the killing of police inspector Bhaskar Kalita during an encounter with the ULFA militants, the official stated.
