Assam official team visits Mizoram border

SILCHAR, Nov 3 - Amid escalating tension along the Assam-Mizoram inter-state border, Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah on Tuesday visited Lailapur in Cachar district and said that no portion of the State�s territory would be given away.

�The land belongs to Assam and there is no second opinion about it... Assam will not budge an inch of its territory. We know our borders and we will not give up our constitutional boundary,� he said.

As per Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal�s directive following the death of an allegedly abducted person, identified as Imtiaz Ali, in Mizoram�s custody, the Chief Secretary along with Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta visited the tense border area.

Forest and Environment Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy, Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli and other higher officials were also part of the visiting team.

�We believe in peaceful coexistence and want the border row to be solved cordially. The matter has been taken up at the highest level... it has been discussed at the MHA Joint Secretary level and also between the Home Secretaries of both the states... We are concerned about the developments,� Baruah told media persons.

DGP Mahanta said, �Assam Police has taken sufficient steps to ensure safety and security of people of the State. Measures have also been taken to check foul attempts of grabbing Assam�s land... We are in constant touch with the Government of India in this regard.�

As per the announcement made by the Chief Minister to provide an ex gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased person from Dholai constituency, minister Suklabaidya handed over the cheque to the family of the deceased. Later, the minister made it clear that the State government will institute an inquiry into the killing incident and mulling to hand over the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The minister requested the people living close to the inter-state border not to cross over to the other side considering the prevailing situation. He said three border outposts would come up in the area for safety and protection of local people.
