Assam most-searched State as per Google analysis

NEW DELHI, April 19 - While Assam emerged as the most searched State among the five undergoing Assembly polls, BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma was the most searched politician, according to a release issued by search engine Google.

Google on Tuesday released interesting search- based insights from Assam, post a high pitched and high stakes political battle that took place in the poll-bound State.

With a significant surge in election-related queries, Assam overtook Tamil Nadu with a massive lead in search interest in the week before the first phase of elections in the State. But overall, Tamil Nadu topped the search charts among the five States going to polls, followed closely by West Bengal and Kerala, according to Google search trends analysis.

Former Congress party rebel leader-turned-key strategist for BJP in Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, emerged as the most-searched political leader.

However, what is bound to come as an upsetting news for Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is that he now trails his former key lieutenant Himanta Biswa Sarma.

An interesting surge in search interest for Himanta Biswa Sarma on voting day moved him up against Tarun Gogoi, who was leading the search charts for days before the voting day. BJP�s chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonwal trails a distant third among the top searched leaders from the State.

Even as Chief Minister Gogoi continues to witness wide search interest from Dibrugarh, Tezpur, Guwahati and Silchar, his close opponent Himanta Biswa Sarma took the lead on voting day witnessing significant spike in search interest amid search queries emerging from Guwahati, Silchar, Dibrugarh and Tezpur region. Search interest for BJP�s CM candidate Sarbananda Sonwal remained restricted to Dibrugarh and Guwahati.

Other prominent leaders who found mention in online queries includes Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Brindaban Goswami, Anjan Dutta, Rakibul Hussain, Pradyut Bardoloi, Sankar Prasad Rai, Biswajit Ray, R.M Bhuyan and Sherman Ali

With strong voter turnout during the first phase of elections in Assam, search queries around �Opinion Polls� have peaked post the initial phase of voting, Google analysis revealed .

Voting exercise across the five States will continue over the coming months and the election results will be announced on May 19 next.
