SHILLONG, May 22 In view of the uneasy calm prevailing at Langpih in the Assam-Meghalaya inter-State border, top officials of both the State Governments will be meeting on Thursday to sort out the differences that erupted recently and as part of a dialogue to end the decade-old boundary crisis, officials said here on Monday.
We will be meeting on May 24 as part of the Chief Secretary-level talks, State Chief Secretary WMS Pariat said. According to Pariat, the recent incident at Langpih, in which a community building built by the villagers was demolished by Assam Government officials, would also be discussed with his counterpart.
Pariat was, however, not sure whether the building which was dismantled was a new structure or a replacement of the old one. The building built next to the Langpih market was dismantled on May 19 by Assam Government officials.
Langpih is one of the disputed areas along the inter-State border which falls under West Khasi Hills district and Kamrup district in neighbouring Assam.
Meghalaya and Assam have 12 areas of difference along the inter-State border and the matter got worse when in May 2010 four youths from Meghalaya were shot dead by Assam police during a clash at Langpih.
Meghalaya had adopted a resolution to urged the Centre for the constitution of a Border Commission which was rejected by the Assam Government.
