GUWAHATI, Dec 4 - Assam qualified to the quarterfinal stage of the Ranji Trophy from Group A along with Vidarbha and Bengal.
The Assam-Bengal match ended in a draw and the host team gained one point from this encounter.
Assam stood third in the group with 26 points while Vidarbha took the top slot with 29 points. Bengal (28 points) is at second position.
It is for the third time that Assam has entered the last-eight stage after the format was changed. Assam played against Uttar Pradesh in the 2009-10 season while last year Assam's opponent was Karnataka in the quarters.
On the final day at the Barsapara cricket stadium here today, Assam began with the overnight score of 72 for two. But due to dampness of the outfield due to last night�s rain the match was started 190 minute later and 48 overs were possible today. Assam lost eight wickets for 143 when the match was called off.
Opener Pallav Das played a courageous knock of 55. He stayed at the crease for long 252 minutes and faced 182 deliveries. Apart from Pallav, other batsmen could not last long as spinner Aamir Abdul Gani ripped through the Assam batting line up chipping in four wickets today and he completed his five-wicket haul.
The cricketing fraternity and the officials of the Assam Cricket Association, including president Gautam Roy, secretary Bikash Baruah, senior member Niloy Dutta, joint secretaries Sanatan Das, Ajoy Sarma congratulated the players of the Assam team, led by Gokul Sharma for its laudable show this season.
The fixture of the knock-out stage is yet to be announced.
