Doomdooma, March 18: Journalist, former AASU leader and social activist of Digboi, Arup Kalita breathed his last on Wednesday morning at his residence at No. 3 Borbill of Digboi. He was only 39 and was suffering from liver related ailments.

A former General Secretary of the Digboi unit of AASU, Arup Kalita was associated with various social activities since his student life. Later, he stepped into the field of journalism and started his career as the local correspondent of vernacular daily "Asomiya Khabar".

Later, he joined another vernacular daily "Niyamiya Barta" and at the time of his death Kalita was associated with "Dainik Agradoot" as a local correspondent from Digboi. He was also associated with several web portals. He was the Vice President of Digboi Press Club and former Assistant Secretary and Treasurer of Tinsukia District Journalists Association (TDJA). Kalita was a press correspondent recognised by DIPR Assam.

Before cremation on Wednesday afternoon, various organisations and individuals offered their last tributes to Arup Kalita at his residence. Tinsukia District Journalists Association, Assam Union of Working Journalists, Margherita Journalists Association, Press Clubs of Digboi, Doomdooma, Tinsukia, Saikhowa, Sadiya and Kakopothar, AASU, AJYCP and several other organisations and individuals condoled the death of Kalita. He leaves behind his parents, wife and a 12-year-old son.
