SILCHAR, Sept 26 - In a major development towards augmenting better health care amidst the constant surge patients of the COVID-19 pandemic, Minister of Health Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the much-awaited 40-bedded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) on Saturday and laid the foundation stone for the 500-bedded Emergency hospital wing inside the premises of the hospital.
As a part of his two day visit to Barak Valley, Dr Sarma reached SMCH and inaugurated the newly-constructed ICU in the presence of Silchar and Karimganj MPs Dr Rajdeep Roy and Kripanath Mallah, local MLAs and authorities of district administration and the hospital.
�SMCH has been an important health centre for providing medical services to Silchar and Barak Valley. The 40-bedded ICU shall further be upgraded to 100 beds by December this year. The new hospital building estimated to be worth Rs 90 crore along with other medical facilities worth Rs 44 crore shall strengthen health care in the area,� the Minister said after the ceremonial proceedings.
Further, Dr Sarma went on to add that people shall remember COVID-19 as a pandemic which should not have happened. �It is a day which is making us feel confident that our journey for progress and development is on the right track and we are doing something for the people of Assam. The ICU is a welcome addition amidst the COVID-19 situation. The State government had decided to upscale the network of ICUs across the Government sector to 1000 within a year. Assam health care should become a good model for everyone to look at in the years to come and this has become possible mainly due to the selfless services of rendered by the healthcare personnel in the battle against the pandemic which has also given a fillip for changing the narrative towards health care facilities in the State-run hospitals,� he maintained.
Earlier on Friday, the PWD Minister laid the foundation stone of a 1000-seat capacity auditorium at Ram Krishna Nagar in Ratabari constituency of Karimganj district and announced that Rs 100 crore has been sanctioned for Ratabari constituency for development work of some of the key roads projects including Kanhai Bazar-Patharkandi (Rs 22 crore) and Asimganj-Anipur (Rs 10 crore). During his visit, Dr Sarma inspected the site along with PWD Officials and interacted with local people as well. He urged the people to realise the situation and maintain the safety protocols including wearing of face covers and social distancing to keep themselves safe from the clutches of COVID-19.
