Assam has 1.2 lakh �D� voters

GUWAHATI, March 18 - There are around 1.2 lakh �D� voters in Assam, State�s chief electoral officer Mukesh Sahu said today. He also clarified that those whose names appear in the voters list, even if they are not yet included in the NRC, can exercise their franchise in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, to encourage all sections of voters, especially the new generation, to cast their votes in the upcoming election, the State election department has been carrying out a massive awareness drive across Assam, Sahu said at a press conference here.

Today as part of the awareness drive, the department released a song along with five videos and ten posters containing messages to sensitize the voters about the electoral process.

The videos and posters portray personalities such as singer Tarali Sarma, sprinter Hima Das, actor Kapil Bora, bodybuilder Golap Rabha and environmental activist Purnima Devi Barman who have been appointed as State icons by the election department to sensitize people on the Lok Sabha elections.

The chief electoral officer also released a handbook titled Aaideur Hatputhi as part of its �Aaideur Chora� campaign undertaken in collaboration with the Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission (ASRLM) and Assam State Urban Livelihood Mission (ASULM) to sensitize women voter of the State. The handbook will be distributed by the department across the State among female voters.

According to the election department, very soon it will appoint 2,556 village ambassadors across the State. To be known as �Chandraprava�, the village ambassador will spread the message of voter education and electoral participation among the masses.

Moreover, this time the election department has taken special measures for the differently abled voter for which it will appoint �Divyanga Sarathi� across the State. As part of the campaign, the Sishu Sarathi has been carrying out awareness drive in some districts of the State.

On the other hand, under the �ihelp� campaign the department will also set up 4,587 centers across the State. In Guwahati, the Red FM will organize an awareness drive in colleges and other public places on behalf of the department in coming days.

Mukesh Sahu informed that 30 extra companies of security force have been brought to the State to maintain law and order situation during the election time.
