GUWAHATI, Aug 3 - A teenage girl from Assam was rescued from a village in Haryana in a joint operation by Assam Police, Haryana Police and Shakti Vahini, an NGO, on Sunday.
The rescuers overcame stiff resistance by the villagers, who claimed their daughter-in-law was bought for Rs 80,000.
According to Rishi Kant of Shakti Vahini, Aasma (name changed) was lured out of Assam by a girl, who befriended her. One Shyama married her forcibly and subjected her to the worst form of slavery. She was made to perform household chores the entire day and at night, Shyama would torment her sexually, said Rishi while talking this correspondent.
Aasma went missing from her hometown in January, 2015. Later, the family of the victim girl received a call from Aasma stating that she was in a very difficult situation and had been confined in a house near Rewari railway station in Haryana.
Acting on the tip-off, a police team from Assam along with Shakti Vahini reached Rewari and with the direction of Superintendent of Police of Rewari district, a raid was conducted in Nayi Abadi Basti there from where the girl was rescued from the house of one Shyama who is in his thirties.
After the rescue, the victim revealed that in December, 2014 she met a girl named Sofia in a local market in Assam and she became friends with her. One day, Sofia gave her a chocolate laced with sedatives and Aasma went unconscious.
When she gained consciousness she found herself at Jalpaiguri railway station with Sofia and one Sharif. From there she was taken to Gurgaon in Haryana. The victim said that there she was sold off to two persons named Rajesh and Arjun by Sofia for Rs 80,000. Aasma deposed before the police and the NGO that she was kept in a house at Gurgaon for almost a month where her photos were clicked and she was also shown to various men who came to the house.
I was beaten up regularly by Rajesh and Arjun who also threatened to kill me if I do not agree to what they would dictate. Later, I was sold off to two other persons named Billu and Kailash for Rs 80,000, she stated. She said Billu, Kailash, Rajesh and Arjun forcefully married her off to Billu and Kailashs brother Shyama.
After the rescue, the villagers surrounded the police station and claimed that they would not allow the girl to go back to Assam. A case has already been registered under the relevant section of the India Penal Code at Gorchuk police station here.
