Assam gets 19 pc excess rain in 1st half of monsoon season

GUWAHATI, Aug 1 - Assam has witnessed 19 per cent excess rainfall this monsoon season so far.

During the first half of the monsoon season (June 1 to July 31), the cumulative rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya was 1324.4 mm against normal rainfall of 1054.6 mm, a departure of 26 per cent, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

While Assam has received 19 per cent above normal rainfall, Meghalaya has witnessed 36 per cent excess rainfall. The actual rainfall during the period in Assam was 1032.5 mm against the normal of 864.7 mm.

However, the rainfall was not evenly distributed among the districts. Three meteorological districts in the State had deficient rainfall and 13 had normal rainfall. Three districts had rainfall in �large excess� while eight had �excess rainfall�.

Darrang and Morigaon have received 50 per cent deficient rainfall during the first half of the monsoon season.

On the other hand, Dhemaji has received 2320.2 mm rainfall against the average of 989.6 mm, an excess of 134 per cent. Similarly, Baksa district has received 1763.3 mm rainfall during the June-July against the average of 800.2 mm, an excess of 120 per cent.

However, rainfall over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura was deficient while it was normal over Arunachal Pradesh.

The IMD has predicted that during the first week of August, rainfall over Assam is likely to be above normal. The following week, rainfall activity may normalize.

According to a forecast by the IMD, quantitatively, the rainfall for the country as a whole during the second half of the season is likely to be 104 per cent of LPA (long period average) with a model error of plus-minus 8 per cent.
