Assam Day celebrated in UK

GUWAHATI, Sept 5 � Like in previous years, Assam Day 2011 was celebrated on August 27 and 28 in Brooklands Hotel in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England by the members of Assamese community residing in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

People from Dubai and Assam also participated in the celebration, a press release stated.

The United Assam Association of UK, under the aegis of which the celebration took place, through the event seeks to keep up the Assamese traditions of culture and language despite being several thousand miles away from native Assam.

The first day began with informal warming up sessions of music, song, dance and plenty of Assamese cuisines.

The impromptu cultural contributions by many home-grown (UK) talents were complemented by a splendidly choreographed group Bihu Dance by actress Madhurima Choudhury who had performed on previous occasions too during Assam Days.

The second and final day was marked by a quiz contest hosted by Dr Gaurav Goswami.

Assamese film titled Tumar Morome Moor produced by Dr Cida Das was also screened on the second day.

Sattriya dance exponent Menaka PP Bora, who is also an award winning Indian Classical dance soloist, choreographer and ethnomusicologist from Assam, enthralled the audience in the evening.

Sanjoy Dey, a popular singer, who is currently based in Leeds, England, also performed on the occasion.

Menaka PP Bora delighted the audience with new pieces of Sattriya Dance and Bharat Natyam with a particular focus on Assam, both performances being preceded by vocal explanations at the beginning.

Many other noted personalities based in UK were presented on the occasion.
