MUMBAI, Aug 5 (IANS) - Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is recovering well after major heart surgeries were performed on him at the Asian Heart Institute here, doctors Thursday said.
"The Chief Minister was taken off the ventilator and he is communicating normally with his care givers. Presently he is feeling comfortable and not complaining of any pain and doing his physiotherapy exercises," eminent cardiac surgeon Ramkanta Panda told IANS.
"He is on a liquid diet with all his vital parameters stable and showing good signs of a speedy recovery."
Doctors at the Asian Heart Institute Wednesday successfully carried out three complicated heart surgeries - a bypass surgery, a valve replacement surgery and an operation to enlarge two blocked arteries.
The surgeries took seven hours.
The Chief Minister complained of breathing problem and rise in blood pressure July 24 while attending the meeting of National Development Council in New Delhi chaired by the Prime Minister.
"He will be in the ICU for the next four to five days and then for another two weeks in the hospital. He should be able to fully take over his duties in four weeks from now," Panda said.
The team of doctors that carried out a bypass surgery on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2009 was led by Panda, a man whose name comes very high on the list of the world's top heart surgeons performing high-risk surgeries.
He and his team is credited of having performed about 12,000 heart surgeries, including hundreds of operations which most other doctors declared as inoperable.
