Assam celebrates 64th I-day with gaiety

GUWAHATI, Aug 16 � The 64th Independence Day of the nation was celebrated ceremonially all over the State. Our correspondents report.

Lumding: The 64th Independence Day was celebrated at Lumding in a befitting manner. The National Flag was hoisted at Shahid Field, Lumding by Harendra Talukdar, BDO, Sankardev Nagar, Hojai at 9.00 am. He was given the guard of honour by Lumding Police.

The National Flag was also hoisted at private houses, Government and Non government � offices, educational institutions, business organisations shops, trade union offices, offices of political parties, clubs, municipal board office.

Dhing: GS Das, circle officer Dhing formally unfurled the Tricolour centrally here at Dhing Circle office ground on the occasion of the 64th Independence Day. March past by the cadets of Dhing College and K.B.H.S. School NCC units and a colourful cultural show by the students of local schools were the added attraction of the I-Day programme. People also paid rich tributes at the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Dhing Chariali at 8.30 am. Flag hoisting was also peacefully carried out in various schools, colleges and offices of the greater Dhing area. In the evening, earthern lamps were lit at the Gandhi statue.

Kampur: Along with the rest of the country, the 64th Independence Day was celebrated at Kampur also with enthusiasm and patriotic fervour at the historical Raas field of Kampur.

On this occasion, the National Tricolour was unfurled by Bibhas Chandra Modi, executive magistrate and revenue in charge of Kampur Revenue Circle in presence of a large gathering. Modi also inspected a guard of honours.

A number of programmes including felicitation to freedom fighters of Kamrup, floral tributes to martyrs paintings by children, peace procession etc. were held to mark the occasion.

Kamalabari: The 64th Independence day was celebrated in Majuli subdivision with fervour and enthusiasm.

Rajiv Lochan Pegu, Parliamentary Secretary Water Resources, Assam, unfurled the National flag at the public function at the court field Garamur, here and took the salute.

Mauchumi Saikia, the sole successful candidate of Majuli subdivision in the Jorhat District Middle School Scholarship Examination this year, who appeared in the examination from the Madhya Majuli Parijat HE school, Atchur Pegu, student of the Jonaki Jatiya Vidyalaya securing the 19th position in the HSLC examination this year, Dibyajyoti Pagag of Pitambardev Goswami College, Garamur who topped the list of the successful candidates in Majuli this year in the HSSLC (arts) examination and Rahul Saikia of the Chamaguri Satra Rawnapar HS School who secured the highest marks among the successful candidates in the HSSLC examination (Science) this year were felicitated in the function. The district Scout and Guide award recipients were also felicitated.

Nalbari: With the rest of the country, people in Nalbari also celebrated the 64th Independence Day defying the boycott call given by militant outfit ULFA.

In the central function organised by the Nalbari district administration at Gurdon HS School play ground, the Social Welfare Minister Akan Bora hoisted the National Tri-colour. Earlier, the Minister garlanded on the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi and paid tributes to the martyrs of freedom movement.

Bora also inspected a guard of honour. A colourful cultural show was also presented. The Independence Day was also celebrated at all the schools, Government offices and public institutions at the district.

Hatsingimari: Independence Day was celebrated colourfully at Hatsingimari, the headquarter of South Salmara-Mankachar subdivision of Dhubri district. The National Flag was hoisted at Jana HS School field, Kharuabanda by Sayad Ishfaq Rahman, SDO (C), Hatsingimari.

The other programmes held on the occasion included cultural programmes displaying local folk culture, games among the children, quiz competition and a friendly football match between Public XI and SDO (C) XI.

Morigaon: The 64th Independence Day was celebrated here at Morigaon amid enthusiasm. Amid a huge gathering, the National Flag was hoisted at Morigaon Tarun Ram Phukan playground by Gautam Bora, Minister for Education. Earlier, glowing tributes were paid to the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi and other martyrs who laid down their lives in the freedom struggle.

Silchar: The 64th Independence Day was celebrated in Cachar district with great enthusiam and due solemnity.

In Silchar, the Tricolour was ceremoniously hoisted by Dinesh Prasad Goala, Minister, Urban Development and Housing, at the S.M. Dev Stadium.

BSF, CRPF, AP Battalian, District Police, Home Guard, NCC Boys, Scouts and Guides participated in the combined parade. A cultural programme was also held and grants in aid were distributed from various department after the ceremonial flag hoisting.

Tinsukia: Independence Day was celebrated in Tinsukia district with gaiety and people participated in the official programmes defying the dictates of militant organisations.

In Tinsukia, the Tricolour was unfurled by parliamentary secretary, Power and Industry Dept., Govt. of Assam, Bidya Singh Engleng at Boy�s ITI playground. He also inspected the guard of honour and took the salute of the march past participated by the contingents of Police, CRPF, NCC and school children.

He felicitated freedom fighters Lila Bora and Nidhiram Chutia, students and sports persons, police officers who have brought laurel to the district and distributed prizes to the winners of the competitions held for the occasion. Students of different schools of Tinsukia performed cultural programmes.

In the same manner, people of Sadiya and Margherita also celebrated Independence Day.

In Sadiya and Margherita, the subdivisional officer (civil) Lakhinandan Gogoi and Sarat Ch. Saikia, parliamentary secretary, Govt. of Assam unfurled the Tricolours as well as inspected the guard of honour and took the salutes of the march pasts respectively.

Baihata Chariali: The 64th Independence day was celebrated at Baihata Chariali Police station including some other Public places here. At 9 am the national tricolour was hoisted at Baihata Chariali Police station complex by H.C Sarma. O.C. of the Police station before a huge gathering. Hoisting the national flag Sarma called upon the public to maintain peace and harmony among the different ethnic groups of the state. He also urged the public to extend their co-operation to the administration in order to establish peace and a violent free situation in the greater area under the police station. In the programme members of V.D.P. and other social organisations were also attended.

Rangiya:Independence Day was celebrated here at Rangiya with gaiety and fervour amid a huge gathering. Chief guest Uttara Kalita,local MLA of Kamlpur constituency received the guard of honour and inspected the colourful parade of different troupes of NCC, Scouts & Guides, Assam Police battalion here at Rangiya HS School playground.

Freedom fighters, talented sportspersons, ideal farmers, workers etc., were felicitated and honoured on behalf of the administration . Later, a colourful cultural show was presented by the students of different schools of the locality.

Kalaigaon:The 64th I-Day was celebrated at Kalaigaon with gaiety. Dina Moni Das,Circle Officer, Kalaigaon Revenue Circle hoisted the Tricolour at Gandhi Bakori,before offering tribute to thousands of known and unknown people who had sacrificed their lives for the nation. Cultural events were also arranged on the occasion.

At JNV , Kalaigaon, nonagenarian freedom fighter Pani Ram Das (95 years) hoisting the Tricolour appealed to the people, particularly the students to study and follow Gandhi. Madhab Sarma, principal JNV,Kalaigaon distributed prizes to the winners of various competitions. It needs mention that three distinguished persons of Kalaigaon namely�Mahendra Saikia, Karun Deka and child scientist Juriti Saharia were awarded district excellence awards at the central I-Day programme at Udalguri.

At Tangla, DN Hazarika, circle officer,Harisinga Revenue Circle hoisted the National Flag. Santius Kunjur,EM, BTC, Bonjar Daimari, Deputy Speaker, BTC also attended the Independence Day programme at Tangla where six distinguished persons headed by Ananta Bagh,were felicitated.

At sub-divisional HQ Bhergaon, SDO(civil) Debajyoti Dutta,ADC hoisted the Tricolour in the presence of thousands of people. Various sports and cultural events were organised on the occasion including a few dare devil activities like putting nails into his own body by a local youth.

Digboi: The Independence Day was celebrated at Margherita at the subdivisional level with paying of homage to the martyrs of the freedom movement and hoisting of the National Tricolour by the parliamentary secretary, Education, Sarat Saikia at the Central Field.The flag hoisting was followed by presentation of awards to some select select individuals and offices and organisations for excellence in the field of public service. Accordingly, the best gaonburha award was given to Binod Taina and the best subdivisional level government office award went to Margherita Forest Range Office besides many other such awards to other individuals and organisations. This was followed by the presentation of a cultural medley.

Kaliabor: Independence Day was celebrated centrally here at Gandhi Maidan Kuwaritol under the auspices of Kaliabor civil sub-division Administration.

The Tri-colour was unfurled by SR Bordhan, SDO (C), Kaliabor. He also inspected the guard of honour and took the salute at the march past presented by Police, NCC and Scout and Guides etc. It was followed by felicitation to freedom fighters and others and exhibition of various cultural programmes presented by the local artists.

North Lakhimpur: The 64th Independence Day of the Nation was celebrated with traditional pomp and ceremony in inclement weather in North Lakhimpur. The official celebration of the day began with the hoisting of the National Flag by Bharat Narah, Minister for Cultural Affairs at the playground of North Lakhimpur Govt HS School in the morning. Just after the flag hoisting and inspection of the guard of honour, heavy showers lashed the parade ground for more than an hour affecting the entire ceremony of the Independence Day.

Goalpara: The Independence Day organised by the Goalpara district administration was observed at Junior Technical School (JTS) playground of Goalpara in a befiting manner, our Dudhnoi correspondent reports.

The National Tricolour was hoisted by Nurzamal Sarkar, Minister of Fisheries, Assam. Later on as parts of the programmes, a number of meritorious students and a freedom fighter were felicitated.

Dudhnoi: Organised jointly by the local administration and Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) the Independence Day was celebrated at Dudhnoi Public Playground. The National Flag was hoisted by Dipak Kumar Choudhury, secretary of RHAC and Deben Daimary, MLA, Dudhnoi earlier performing the swahid tarpan.

Haflong: The 64th Independence Day was celebrated in a befitting manner at DSA Ground, Haflong. Debojit Thaosen, chief executive member, Dima Hasao Autonomous Council hoisted National Flag and received guard of honour from the participating contingents.

The colourful cultural programme representing different communities were also performed on the occasion. Besides these meritorious students showing outstanding results were felicitated and the prizes for best contingents and cultural troupes were also given.

Diphu: Khorsing Engti, Minister, HAD, Vety etc unfurled the National Tricolour at Diphu, Karbi Anglong Sports Association (KASA) amid a mammoth gathering on the occasion of 64th Independence Day celebration organised by the district administration of Diphu, a press release said. At the outset, the minister remembered those martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the cause of Independence of India. He also inspected a guard of honour presented by police, paramilitary, home guard and NCC students from various schools. He also presented cash prizes to handicapped persons and other prizes to beneficiaries in the parade ground. Cultural troupes of various tributes and others organisations presented cultural items at the parade ground.

Hojai: Independence Day was celebrated centrally at Sankardevnagar Kachari maidan, the subdivisional head quarter of Hojai with enthusiasm.

The National Tri-colour was hoisted by Munindra Sharma, SDO (Civil), Hojai before a capacity crowd. He inspected the guard of honour presented by Police, NCC, Scouts, students of different institutions and took the salute of March Past. Four freedom fighters of the subdivision were also honoured on the occasion. Three power tillers and two tractors were distributed to give self help group. Cultural items presented by various groups an exhibition football match between Hojai Subdivision Journalist XI and Subdivisional Administration were the added attraction among others.

Kokrajhar: Along with rest of the country, the 64th Independence Day was also observed here at Kokrajhar, the heart of Bodoland with a day-long colourful programme.

The State Agriculture Minister Pramila Rani Brahma unfurled the Tricolour at Govt HS & MP school playground amid the gathering.

She inspected the guard of honour and distributed rewards and citations for outstanding performances in various fields.

Sivasagar: Amid tight security, Minister of Law, Sericulture, Handloom & Textile Pronob Gogoi hoisted the National Flag at Boarding Field Sivasagar and took salute from contingents of NCC, Scouts & Guides cadets of Fuleswari Girls HS School, Govt Boys HS School, Bezboruah HS School, Thanuram Gogoi Memorial School, Bir Lachit College and security forces.
