Assam beat Arunachal in NE Olympic soccer

GUWAHATI, Oct 26 - The Assam men�s football team defeated Arunachal Pradesh 2-1 in the ongoing North East Olympic Games in Imphal today.

Chayaram Basumatary (18th and 35th minute) netted both the goals for Assam while John Hmar Songate reduced the margin in the 69th minute.

Earlier in the first match yesterday, Assam played a goalless draw against Sikkim. In the women�s category, Manipur beat Assam 2-0 in the first match yesterday while Assam girls trounced Nagaland 7-0 today. Sainjali Kemprai (3 goals), Mina Basumatary (2 goals), Mrinali Borah and Sonia Marak (1 goal each) were the scorers for Assam.

Shooting: Assam bagged gold in 10m air rifle men�s team event. The team comprising of Neelut Prasad Boruah, Jyotish Protim Konwar and Ayush Mishra won the gold while the women�s team comprising of Naini Devi, Nisha Baishya and Santa Sharma bagged the silver in air rifle women�s team event.

In the individual category, Neelut Prasad Boruah hit gold with a games record score of 594. The individual gold in women�s event went to Naini Devi with a record score of 585 .

Our Imphal correspondent adds: Two athletes from Assam Subarna Kalita (10.60 sec) and Nibedita Barman (11.95 sec) became the fastest man and women respectively in the maiden edition of the North East Olympic Games which is underway here at three different venues including Khuman Lampak Sports Complex since Wednesday.

Other gold medal winners from Assam are: Manoj Swargiari (javelin throw), Pinky Brahma (javelin throw), Debakar Choubey (long jump), Rimpi Buragohain (long jump), 4x100m relay (women).
