JONAI, May 17 � Keeping an objective to promote tolerance and understanding among various ethnic communities living along Assam-Arunachal border area, Dhemaji district Art & Culture department in collaboration with the district administration today conducted a cultural exchange programme at Murkongselek College here.

Welcoming the participants of the day-long cultural programme, Jonai SDO (Civil), Atul Sharma urged the boundary dwellers to maintain peaceful coexistence. Appreciating the efforts of Art & Culture department, he expressed his optimism that such cultural exchange would lessen the dispute and communal tension among the people living at both sides.

Addressing the meet, District Art & Cultural Officer, Jiten Das termed the cultural exchange programme as the best medium of social bonding. He appealed to all sections of people living along the border area to maintain peace and tranquillity and said that peaceful coexistence would bring overall development of both the State.

Das informed that the department has launched the series of programme on May 14 last at Kangku Bolma in north Dhemaji. It will conduct more such programme at the border area in the coming days. �We have a comprehensive plan to tie up the different ethnic communities living along the interstate boundary with cultural exchange�, Das said in his speech.

Among others Mising Baane Kebang president, Dr Bidheswar Doley, retired principal Pratap Pao also spoke on inter-community relationship through cultural exchange on the occasion.

Cultural troupes from different Assamese and Arunachali communities including Mising, Bodo, Nepali, Ahom, Sonowal Kochari, Bengali and Adi communities participated in the programme and showcased their rich cultural heritage on the occasion.

The entire northern part of Dhemaji district including Silapathar and Jonai is located on the right bank of mighty Brahmaputra bordering to East Siang and West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh.
