Asom Satra Mahasabha meet held

GOSSAIGAON, June 11 - The first executive meeting of the Asom Satra Mahasabha was held at Sonari on June 3 last. Deepak Baruah, secretary explained the purpose of the meeting and read out the proposals of the last executive meeting.

The meeting resolved that each executive body�s members donate Rs 1,000 to fund the construction of a wall around the land allotted by the government at North Guwahati measuring six bighas to the Asom Satra Mahasabha.

The next executive meeting will be held at Dhupdhara in Goalpara district.

By another resolution, the Sabha discussed thoroughly the reply of suspended general secretary Kusum Mahanta and vice-president Akhil Mahanta. Later, it was decided to settle the matter at the Dhupdhara executive meeting. It may be mentioned that both the suspended office-beares have sought apology for their wrong statements in respect of the Citizen (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The meeting was presided over by Jitendra Nath Prodhani, president of the Asom Satra Mahasabha.

Citizenship Bill opposed: The Gossaigaon branch of the Asam Sahitya Sabha has strongly opposed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. A delegation led by Khanindra Nath Das, advisor, Asam Sahitya Sabha�s Gossaigaon branch met the SDO(C) at his office chamber and handed over to him a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister for pressurising the Central Government not to pass such a suicidal act. The memorandum stated that if the Act is passed, then the Assamese language and culture will face the same threats as the local language and culture have faced in Tripura.
