ASI top official urged to correct martyrs names

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Jan 27 - President of the All Tai Ahom Students Union, Kamrup Metro district committee, Basant Gogoi, recently apprised the Director General of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Usha Sharma about the need to correct names of some freedom fighters from Assam and the other north-eastern States in the list of martyrs displayed in the Swatantra Sangrama Sangrahalaya at Red Fort, New Delhi.

Gogoi recently met the top ASI official and submitted the list of the names of the martyrs of Assam who gave their lives for the county fighting the British even before the 1942 freedom movement. The list presently displays only a few names of freedom fighters from Assam whereas there are 32 of them. Even the names of freedom fighters like Gomadhar Konwar, Piyoli Phukan, Maniram Dewan, Piyali Baruah, Hemoram Borah and Kolai Koch have not been enlisted in the display, a statement said.

Gogoi pointed out that there are mistakes in some of the names presently on display at the Sangrahalaya. While Lerela Kachari has been spelt as Lerela Kohuri, Mukunda Kakoti has been spelt as Mukunda Kawta. He also requested the ASI Director General to include names of martyrs of other north-eastern States in the list.

The DG agreed to look into the matter and asked Gogoi to take the responsibility of collecting the correct names of the martyrs of all the eight north-eastern States. The ASI would include all of them in the said list, she assured.
