ASI caught red-handed taking bribe

GUWAHATI, Oct 21 - An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Jalukbari outpost was today caught red-handed by anti-corruption sleuths while he was taking bribe. ASI Preetish Gupta had demanded Rs 5,000 from one Chintu Rajbongshi of Fatasil Ambari area.

�The ASI had sought the money to file a final report regarding a case of a stolen motorcycle of Rajbongshi. The motorcycle was stolen nine months back. The final report is required for claiming insurance benefits,� Superintendent of Police (Anti-Corruption & Vigilance) Mukul Saikia said.

A trap was laid by the Anti-Corruption personnel and the ASI was caught taking the money red-handed today. The ASI�s arrest came days after a sub-inspector (SI) of Dispur police station was caught taking bribe of Rs 10,000 from a complainant. SI Jyoti Paban Bania had sought the money from a retired police personnel for settling a family dispute. Bania is in judicial custody now.

Today�s case is the 15th case registered against corrupt government officials by the Vigilance & Anti-Corruption bureau this year. Over six district-level government officers have been arrested by the bureau this year, most of them in trap cases.
