Ashes of Tarun Gogoi to be immersed in Brahmaputra off Nimatighat

JORHAT, Dec 7 - The ashes of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will be immersed in the Brahmaputra off Nimatighat in Jorhat on Wednesday by Gaurav Gogoi, the sitting Kaliabor Lok Sabha MP and son of late Tarun Gogoi in the presence of family members and senior Congress party leaders.

Speaking to newspersons here on Monday, AICC Secretary and former Jorhat MLA Rana Goswami said that the ashes of Gogoi will be brought from Guwahati on Tuesday by Gaurav and family members to be accompanied by Congress party leaders and workers.

Goswami said the name of this journey has been given as �Tarun Gogoi Smritit Sadbhabana Yatra and Asti Bisarjan�. The yatra will make stopovers at several places to enable people pay tributes to the ashes. The yatra is scheduled to reach Jorhat on Tuesday evening.

He said in the first phase of the yatra, a part of the ashes will be brought to Jorhat from where the Congress party leaders will collect it from Gaurav and take the same to six other districts of Upper Assam. Similarly, ashes will be taken to all districts of the State zone wise, the AICC Secretary informed.

Goswami said that on Wednesday a public shradhanjali function will be held at the Jorhat Court Field where Dolly Gogoi, wife of Tarun Gogoi, Dip Gogoi, younger brother of Tarun Gogoi and former Kaliabor MP and the incumbent Jorhat district unit Congress president, will be present along with other family members. He said the function will begin in the morning with rendition of religious hymns and gayan bayan.

Former Union Minister and In-Charge of Assam Jitendra Singh and APCC president Ripun Bora will be attending the function, Goswami said.

Goswami stated that colleagues of late Gogoi who had joined Youth Congress along with the stalwart will be felicitated in the function. Another programme would be donating packets of books on the life history of Tarun Gogoi to representatives of three colleges in Jorhat in the function, Goswami informed.

The AICC Secretary further stated that at about 3 pm on Wednesday the ashes will be taken to Nimatighat via Borigaon, Naoboicha, Potia Gaon to be immersed in the mighty Brahmaputra by Gaurav Gogoi. A ferry would take the Gaurav to a spot at a short distance away from the ghat where it would be immersed, Goswami said.
