Ashadeep holds webinar on suicide prevention

GUWAHATI, Sept 12 - To understand suicidal tendencies and to make the masses aware about precursors to suicide and its prevention through ancient scientific techniques like yoga, Ashadeep, a mental health society, conducted an international webinar on �Mental health and yoga� on Thursday on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day.

The session was aimed at providing a platform to individuals to learn some basic yoga poses which have been scientifically proven to reduce stress.

�Suicide is a preventable tragedy. In the modern world suicide is now the second leading cause of death not only among teenagers but also among adults and aged people. Timely intervention and support at various levels along with a healthy lifestyle can act as an effective mechanism to prevent such tragedies,� Dr Anjana Goswami, director of Ashadeep stated.

Dr Sushil Agarwalla, consultant psychiatrist of Ashadeep, and Sumant Chandwadkar, coordinator (North East), Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana of Bangalore, were the chief speakers. Dr Agarwalla delivered a very thought-provoking and precise speech on the importance of discussion on suicide. He spoke about the reasons behind suicide and how one can get rid of such reasons. Sangeeta Deka, psychologist of Ashadeep, delivered the inaugural speech and moderated the programme.

The webinar was attended by participants from across the world, including eminent personalities, researchers and students of various age groups. The session ended with the idea of incorporating yoga into modern lifestyles.
