JORHAT, August 23 � Dimba Bora (59), a switchboard operator at the ASEB control-room at Garmur here, died at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital after he was beaten up by one Pinku Dutta, an employee of the same department today. Later, the people of Garmur area from which Dimba Bora hailed blocked the road near Jorhat Engineering College, Garmur demanding the immediate arrest of Pinku Dutta of Koronga.
According to a source, two groups of electricity board workers were working under Subdivision No 2 in the town. One of the groups completed its assigned task and asked Dimba Bora to provide electricity connection to the phase. But Bora by mistake provided electricity connection to both the phases. The second group, who was still at work, luckily escaped from electrocution.
The group hurriedly reached the control-room and one of the irate workers, Pinku Dutta assaulted Dimba Bora and knocked him unconscious. Bora was taken to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital immediately. But he passed away at the JMCH after an hour.
When the news of the death of Dimba Bora reached his home, the people of the surrounding area of Garmur Kumar Gaon came out on the road and caused damage to the control-room there. They later staged a road blockade programme at Garmur after the incident demanding the arrest of Pinku Dutta. High level police officers and representatives of the district administration reached the place of road blockade and tried to calm the irate public.
The protesters took off the road blockade only when Pinku was arrested by the Jorhat police from his residence this afternoon.
