ASEB win volleyball tourney at Mangaldai

MANGALDAI, March 6 - ASEB Sports Club, Guwahati lifted the Dineswar Kalita and Achyut Ch Barua Memorial Trophy emerging champions in the All Assam Invitational Prize-money Volleyball Tournament here last night.

In the final of the 11th edition of the tournament at the Upahupara Panchayat playground, ASEB registered straight sets win (25-17, 25-14) over another Guwahati based outfit City Club to clinch the title. In the semifinals ASEB got the better of the spirited Tangla 25-23, 25-22 while City Club defeated Khoirabari 25-19, 25-16. With this win ASEB walked away with a prize money of Rs 10,000 along with the trophy while City Club pocketed Rs 5,000 besides the trophy. Abdul Baten of the ASEB team was adjudged best player while Mukul Sarma of Tangla got the best lifter of the tournament award.

Earlier, Naba Kumar Doley, State Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare formally inaugurated the tournament in presence of DC, Darrang Ashok Kr Barman, Mangaldai MLA Gurujyoti Das and chairman, Mangaldai Municipal Board, Pratap Bordoloi among others. According to Manabendra Baruah, secretary of the organising committee a total of twelve teams across the State took part in the tournament.
