ASEB to procure 50 MW additional power

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 28 The Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) is procuring additional 50 MW of power from the open market to meet the power demand during the Puja days. The present power demand of the State is around 1100 MW and the shortfall in supply is around 300 MW.

Meanwhile, each of the areas of the State is witnessing a load shedding of one hour during the peak load hours due to the shortfall in power supply.

According to sources in the ASEB, the Board is procuring the above amount of additional power from the open market at the rate of around Rs 9 per unit. The total quantity of power in terms of units will stand at 2.5 million for five hours between 5pm and 10 pm during the Puja days from October 3 to October 7.

The price of power in the open market has shot up due to the suspension of operation by the Sikkim hydroelectric power stations in the wake of the September 18 earthquake. The Sikkim hydroelectric power stations used to supply around 700 MW of power to the Eastern Region Power Grid.

Besides, the rainless condition has also affected the supply position and raised the demand of power in the State, said the sources.

During the Puja days, due to the holidays observed by the offices and industrial units around 400 MW of power is expected to be saved.
