ASEB back to winning ways

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 5 After a defeat and a draw, defending champions ASEB Sports Club finally came to winning form in their third encounter in this seasons RG Baruah Super Division Football League beating Assam Police Blues 2-1.

In a fast-paced encounter at the Nehru Stadium here today, Dibiendu Patra and Chayaram Basumatary scored for ASEB in the 19th and 39th minutes while Madhusudhan Hazarika narrowed the gap in the 53rd minute.

For the policemen, it was their second defeat as earlier they were beaten by Gauhati Town Club in their lung opener.

The momentum of the match was on a high note from the kick-off itself. On a slightly slippery ground, players of both the teams went about in a positive mind set and the ball swang from one end to another quite frequently.

It was however the ASEB outfit which enjoyed better cohesion and kept the ball in their possession most of the time. The Police defenders had to pass a crucial phase as ASEB frontliners Chayaram Basumatary, Dipankar Sarkar along with medio Mandila Rongmei made repeated forays into their territory.

Police defenders Nganthoiba Singh, Mintu Boro, Bijoy Rabha and Ghanakanta Rajbangshi were not in right form and made some silly mistakes due to which their team had to suffer. Their custodian, Kailash Das, was also in a poor shape today and for the second goal he may be held responsible.

ASEB moved ahead in the 19th minute when unmarked Dibiendu punched home from inside the box capitalising on a goal-mouth melee.

ASEB got the second goal due to lack of understanding among the Police defenders. Dipankar sent a diagonal pass and as keeper Kailash and other defenders failed to anticipate, Chayaram put the ball into the net with ease.

Trailing 0-2 at the breather, the policemen went all out after the break and bounced back to the game firing the reducer in the 53rd minute. It was a good looking goal as reading the ball correctly off a centre sent by Robijit Jigdung, Madhusudhan Hazarika drove home firmly.

After the goal, the cops romped into attack mode with renewed vigour. They created several openings in the second half but finally ASEB defenders managed to guard their citadel without further damage.

SAI-City Police play 2-2 draw: SAI Sports Club spoilt a 2-0 lead against City Police as the match finally ended in a 2-2 draw in the A Division League.

Jonah Kuki netted both the goals in the 47th and 54th minutes. But the City Police team got back to the game in style and levelled the issue through Monoj Ahmed (59th minute) and substitute Robin Boro (83rd minute).
