Asarikandi villagers allege graft in Govt schemes

By CORRESPONDENT

DHUBRI, June 26 - Alleging anomalies, nepotism and corruption in the preparation of the beneficiaries lists under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) and proper execution of the scheme, hundreds of people from the terracotta village of Asarikandi staged a protest rally in front of the Deputy Commissioners office on Monday.

Under the banner of Dhubri district unit of the Scheduled Caste & Tribes Unemployed Association, Assam, the villagers, including women from Asharikandi village, shouted slogans against the corrupt officials of the local District Rural Development Agency and demanded their immediate arrest.

The Asharikandi Gaon Panchayat under Devitola Block of Dhubri district had been declared as a model village for Scheduled Caste people due to which special schemes have been allotted for construction of houses under PMAY-G.

The protesters alleged that while preparing the beneficiary list, the Panchayat secretary and president intentionally excluded the BPL families and included names of families with sound financial condition.

It was also informed by the protesters that out of 407 beneficiaries, only 52 beneficiaries under the schemes originally belong to the BPL category.

It was also informed that in this regard a case (66/17) under Section 120B/420/406/408/409/34 was registered, alleging anomalies of more than Rs 22 lakh.
