Asam Bani steps into 62nd year today

GUWAHATI, June 30 - Asam Bani, the weekly published by the Assam Tribune group of newspapers, is set to step into its 62nd year tomorrow.

First published on July 1, 1955, Asam Bani has had an eventful time ever since, playing the role of a pioneer during the testing times like the language movement, shifting of State capital, the Assam movement, etc., over the decades. It has also been focusing extensively on socio-economic and environmental issues unrelentingly and striving to safeguard the interests of the State and its people. It has also had occasions to come out with special editions at times, topping the popularity charts.

Currently edited by Dilip Chandan, Asam Bani had a long association with a number of distinguished editors, beginning with Satis Chandra Kakati (from July 1, 1955 to July 1, 1980), Tilak Hazarika (from July 2, 1980 to September 30, 1987), Phani Talukdar (from October 1, 1987 to June 15, 1991), Nirod Choudhury (from June 16, 1991 to February 28, 1993), Homen Borgohain (March 1, 1993 to March 5, 1997), and Chandraprasad Saikia (from March 6, 1997 to June 13, 1997).
