Aryabhatta Science Society outlines its vision

TEZPUR, March 9 � National Science Day was celebrated at Dhekiajuli by the Dhekiajuli Aryabhatta Science Society at Trimurty Bhawan here in a bid to generate scientific thought for rebuilding the society and achieving a proper balance between education and development.

In an exclusive interview, noted academician, social worker and general secretary of Aryabhatta Science Society, Dhekiajuli and the district coordinator of Aryabhatta Science Centre run by the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Ganesh Sharma said that the Aryabhatta Science Society was founded at Dhekiajuli town on December 14, 2006 on the National Energy Conservation Day and it was affiliated under Vigyan Prasar, New Delhi on January 31, 2007 with a limited number of dedicated and enthusiastic members with a mission of working for the development of scientific temper among the students in particular and the common people in general.

�We are happy to let you know that our members are educationists and four child scientists represented the State in the National Children�s Science Congress at the national-level competition. The society is working in four major segments, ie., Children�s Science Forum, Housewives� Science Forum, Farmers� Science Forum and Teachers� Science Forum,� Sarma said, adding that the main objective of the Science Society is to generate scientific thinking for rebuilding the society and achieving a proper balance between educational development and to create awareness about balanced diet and food management. He also said that the science body which has been working in the field of water and sanitation, health, hygiene and nutrition, environment and biodiversity conservation and disaster preparedness and management is also stressing on creating awareness among the farmers about the high prospect of locally available plants to extract bio-diesel from its seeds.

�The society also wants to work in search of meritorious students below the poverty line and also to provide scholarship to them for the continuation of their studies. We also want to prepare vermin compost from the waste of the local municipal market and its commercialisation, to take up projects on recreation, tourism and fishing by using unutilised, underutilised lakes, ponds and wetlands of the area and to develop bird sanctuaries. To motivate the students against blind faith, myths and miracles, to find out local archaeological findings and their preservation, to guide and motivate students and teachers in scientific research work and to establish scientific laboratories etc. We believe that by imparting positive thinking, positive attitude and positive enthusiasm among the students, the future foundation of our nation will be good. We have a dream and vision to �Explore Human Resource to Create a New World,� he said.

It needs mention that the society celebrated National Science Day with lighting of lamps and floral tribute to CV Raman by the president of the Aryabhatta Science Society, Dhekiajuli, Narayan Ch Borah. Ganesh Sarma, District Coordinator of Aryabhatta Science Centre, Sonitpur, Dipti Kr Kalita , retired teacher, Dhekiajuli HS, Phanindra Nath Kalita, retired assistant HM of Dhekiajuli Girls� High School, Jadav Ch Nath and Kajal Borah were present as guests. More than 200 students from different schools of the locality, including teachers were present on the occasion. A scientific film show was also organised. The society also distributed solar lanterns to 42 meritorious students of different high schools of Dhekiajuli Development Block as per guidelines of the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Guwahati.
