Arunachal turns TRIHMS into COVID-19 hospital

By Correspondent

ITANAGAR, March 26 - The Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) Hospital in Naharlagun has been converted into a dedicated hospital for treatment of COVID-19 patients.

The decision was taken by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu during a meeting with members of the State Task Force on COVID-19 here today.

The Chief Minister suggested that other hospitals in the State capital like Ramakrishna Mission Hospital should take care of patients suffering from other ailments.

While pointing out that it was encouraging to note that not a single person has tested positive for COVID-19 in the State yet, the Chief Minister cautioned against complacency and said that everybody has to remain on their toes for any eventuality.

We have to be well prepared for a possible outbreak of the disease, which has no cure yet, and pool all our resources to tackle any kind of emergency situation. Therefore, it is necessary for us to have a separate hospital with adequate facilities to deal with the pandemic, Khandu asserted.

He also requested TRIHMS, the lone medical college of the State, to share manpower and expertise of the college in the fight against the virus.

Expressing grave concern over supply of poor quality personal protection equipment (PPE) to doctors and health workers, Khandu said, We will not compromise with the safety of our frontline workers. He added that legal action has been initiated against the defaulters.

He, however, said that the PPE in question have been withdrawn and the Government has ordered a fresh procurement. The Chief Minister directed that all PPE consignments must be vetted by a technical team.

Appealing people not to resort to panic buying and to stay at home, he said the State Government is in constant touch with its Assam counterpart to ensure smooth and timely transportation of essential commodities.

As there is no cure for the disease, prevention through social distancing is the only way out. I appeal to all to take the lockdown seriously and stay at home. We will ensure that there is no scarcity of essential commodities, Khandu said.

The Chief Minister also appealed for religiously following the social distancing advice while buying essential commodities, both by customers and vendors. Meanwhile, the State Government today approved of Rs 1,000 aid to BPL card holders of the State in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.
