Arunachal rivers in spate

By Correspondent

ITANAGAR, Aug 20 - Major rivers in Arunachal Pradesh including the mighty Siang, Lohit, Digaru and Deopani are in spate following incessant rains for past few days and are flowing above the danger level triggering fears of inundation of low-lying areas.

The flood situation, however, in some pockets, has worsened with flash floods washing away road formations, bridges and culverts, thereby disrupting road communication.

Surface communication between Pasighat and Mebo has been totally disrupted following washing away of approach portion of Siku bridge along National Highway-52 by the turbulent Siku river yesterday.

East Siang DC Isha Khosla, who along with a team of officials, rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation, urged the Border Roads Organisation to carry out restoration works on a war footing.

As a precautionary measure, the DC urged the people residing in low-lying areas adjacent to the river not to venture out for boating or fishing in the river.

Mebo MLA Lombo Tayeng informed that Gadum village is totally submerged due to floods in Taro-Tamak river, forcing the villagers to flee to safety. Moreover, the wet rice cultivation fields of Mer village have been washed away.

Incessant rains also wreaked havoc in Dibang Valley district snapping road links to Dambuk, and Hunli sub-division. Dambuk is cut off from all sides, ADC Atul Tayeng informed. Hunli-Desali road, considered to be the lifeline of people of Hunli-Desali and Anini, is also cut off due to change of course of Eze (Deopani) river which eroded the approach road to the temporary bridge over the river.

The major rivers in Lohit district such as Lohit, Kalikhola, Digaru, Lasapani, Denning, Tezukhola and Duranala are also flowing above danger level. Road communication via Parshuram route which was restored by BRTF the day before yesterday again got disrupted due to landslide at many locations between Tohangam and Brahmakund.
