Arunachal Police foil NSCN(U)s abduction bid

By Correspondent

ITANAGAR, Aug 3 - The Arunachal Pradesh Police foiled an abduction bid by the NSCN (U) in the Naharlagun area of the State by arresting a suspected cadre of the Naga outfit on Friday.

Acting on reliable inputs that the NSCN (U) is planning to carry out abduction, extortion and murder in the Naharlagun area, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the police headquarters arrested the alleged cadre near Lekhi village at Nirjuli. The arrested cadre has been identified as Wangchin Wangpan, a resident of Minthong village in Longding district.

A press note from the police headquarters said that in view of the sensitivity of the matter, the SIT team comprising inspectors N Lali, K Tao and A Tayeng and led by SP (SIT) Dr NS Brar, raided various locations in Naharlagun and Nirjuli. During the raids, Wangpan, who is suspected to be a close aide of the self-styled chairman of the NSCN (U)s Arunachal unit, Loliam Latey, was apprehended.

The police recovered one hand grenade, live ammunition, one mobile handset, a voter ID card and a Dimapur-bound bus ticket from him.

A case under sections 120B/364-A/511 of the IPC read with Section 25 (1B)(a) of the Arms Act and Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act has been registered.

Wangpan was earlier arrested in a kidnapping case registered at the Khonsa Police Station under Section 363 of the IPC read with Section 11(ii)/17/18 of the POCSO Act. He was also convicted for three years in an extortion case registered at the Deomali Police Station. He was released from jail in January last.

Dr Brar said with Wangpans arrest, the Arunachal Pradesh Police have foiled a major conspiracy of the NSCN (U) to carry out abduction, extortion and murder in the Itanagar Capital Complex. Further investigation is going on to unearth the details of the conspiracy and arrest of other accomplices in the case is likely, stated the SP (SIT). He, however, did not mention the name of the individual who was on the target of the militant outfit, citing security reasons.
