Arunachal initiates slew of police reforms

By Correspondent

ITANAGAR, Sept 7 As part of initiatives towards ensuring efficient policing, the Arunachal Pradesh Government has come up with a slew of reforms for the men in khaki.

From now on, no policeman will be allowed to practise polygamy as per service rules and there will be no room for the physically unfit personnel. Apart from this, all the police personnel of the State need to undergo mandatory training for at least one month once in a year.

Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu yesterday told the State Assembly, The police personnel from all districts must undergo at least one-month training each year and in case of non-compliance of the order, the policemens pay scale would not be hiked.

Home Minister Tako Dabi said the Home department, as per service rules, will not allow the policemen to keep more than one spouse, warning that if anybody is found practising polygamy, the government will initiate serious action against such police personnel.

Records are being collected on the ailing police personnel, including that of the departmental drivers addicted to liquor. If the policemen were established to be sick, they would initially be given medical treatment and in case, they did not respond to medication they would be relieved of their jobs, stated Dabi.

Dabi was replying to a supplementary from Trinamool Congresss Laeta Umbrey, who urged the government not to utilise the recruitment of civil police, APPBn and IRBn as a tool to redress the problem of unemployment, saying the government has already borne the brunt of physically and mentally unfit police personnel in recent spate of violence across the State.

He further said, The State Government is taking utmost care of the physically and mentally unfit police personnel. Sometimes, the morality of our men in khakis is hurt by irrelevant and combustible comments from general public.

Referring to the recent spate of violence across the State including Itanagar, the Home Minister said, Something might have gone wrong somewhere. But it does not mean that the entire police force is bad and for it, the police and Home department can not be blamed.

Reaffirming that maintenance of internal security was the first and foremost priority of the State Government, Dabi said for the security of men and materials engaged in projects execution, about 20,000 police personnel were needed to be deployed for the Trans-Arunachal Highway being constructed from Tawang to Khonsa and 25,000 more personnel for various hydropower projects being built in different parts of the State.
