Arunachal Guv seeks Centres help to bolster counter-insurgency ops

By Correspondent

ITANAGAR, Sept 8 - Worried over the increase in insurgency-related incidents in eastern Arunachal Pradesh, Governor Brig (Dr) BD Mishra (retd) on Sunday sought the Centres assistance to strengthen counter-insurgency operations in trouble-torn Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts.

Insurgents from other states are considering Arunachal Pradesh a safe haven for their hideouts, extortion, and fresh recruitment drives. There is an intense drive by various insurgent groups to pick local youth from Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts for recruitment, the Governor said while addressing the 68th plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Guwahati.

Mentioning the killing of Tirong Aboh, an elected representative and 10 others in Tirap district by suspected Naga insurgents in May, Brig Mishra also requested cooperation from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to bolster Arunachal Pradeshs counter-insurgency operations by providing men, material, and technological help.

The Governor sought support of the MHA in upgrading the existing facilities at the Police Training Centre, and setting up of Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) in all districts.

Brig Mishra highlighted the challenges faced by the State in different sectors including educational infrastructure, road and air communication, innovation, sustainable development, improving policing and countering-insurgency activities.

The Governor apprised the NEC that the biggest problem which Arunachal Pradesh faces is lack of robust land, air, internet and mobile network connectivity. Pointing out that majority of the schools constructed decades ago were now in dilapidated condition, he requested the NEC to make provisions for upgrading educational infrastructure.

Reiterating his call for good road, rail, air and telecommunication connectivity for speedy development of the frontier state, the Governor said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of Hollongi Airport in February 2019, and its early construction will help the state have reliable air connectivity.

He requested the NEC to take up the matter with the Airports Authority of India and expedite the completion of the airport, within three years, which has been stated by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation (Independent Charge) Hardeep Singh Puri.

Raising the issue of the strategically important Miao-Vijoynagar road, the Governor sought support of the NEC and Central ministries, and said robust road connectivity was required not only for bringing inclusive development in the strategic area, but also for checking poaching of tigers and for protection of flora and fauna of the Namdapha National Park and Tiger Reserve.
