ITANAGAR, May 11 - Arunachal Pradesh Governor JP Rajkhowa has urged North Eastern Council (NEC) Secretary Ram Muivah to take up with the Centre the development of the orphan roads as they benefit both sides of the inter-State border. The issue of connectivity came up when Muivah met the Governor at Raj Bhavan here yesterday.

The Governor also asked the NEC Secretary to develop the Advanced Landing Grounds at Ziro, Pasighat and Aalo in the line of Lilabari, Tezpur and Umroi Airports, where there are regular air services and which are funded by NEC.

Notwithstanding road connectivity problem in the State and NE region, there is not even a single institute for road research and design, the Governor pointed out and suggested setting up of such an Institute by NEC. He also suggested for setting up of Centres of Excellence for architecture, skill development, tourism, etc., which will be beneficial for all the Northeastern States.

While discussing the various NEC-backed schemes in the State, the Governor emphasised on regular visits and monitoring by NEC officials of the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Project (NERCORMP).

Besides calling for enhancing the annual budget of the Council so that larger projects can be taken up, Rajkhowa suggested that NEC should entertain projects of less than Rs 20 lakh, when approached directly by needy people.

Muivah was in the Arunachal capital in connection with ensuing Plenary Meeting of NEC at Shillong on May 27 next.

Security meet: Later in the day, the Governor chaired a high-level meeting at Raj Bhavan to review the security scenario, law and order and insurgency-related issues of the State.

The security review meet came in the wake of recent police firing incident at Tawang that claimed the lives of two civilians.

The Governor advised the State Government to evolve a suitable mechanism involving general public, civil society organisations and security forces to address any major law and order problem.

The Governor reviewed the security scenario in the Capital Complex and the State, along with Chief Minister Kalikho Pul, Dy CM Kameng Dolo, in-charge DGP Nabin Payeng and other top-ranking officials.

He appealed to the people including spiritual leaders, public leaders and youth to cooperate with the administration to maintain public peace and tranquility and restore the earlier status of Tawang as the most peaceful district in India.
