ITANAGAR, June 30 - Arunachal Pradesh Government has handed over the case of Toko Yames disappearance and subsequent death in Tawang last year to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following strong demands from students organisations and the victims family.
Toko Yame, a 12th standard student of a government-run school in Tawang, went missing under mysterious circumstances following a group clash between students of Govt Higher Secondary School, Tawang and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Tawang on September 16. His semi-decomposed body was found eight days later from a waterfall near Tawang.
In this regard, a case was registered at Tawang police station on the day of his disappearance and during the investigation, the body of the missing boy was recovered on September 24. Subsequently, the case was transferred to State Crime Branch (SIT) on October 13 last year.
However, the State Government took note that the case is serious and sensitive in nature and also that representations have been received from the public. Therefore the government has decided to hand over the case to CBI for expediting the investigation process and for ensuring that justice is delivered to the bereaved family members, said a press release from the CMs Office here on Friday.
In a letter to CBI, State Home Commissioner has informed that on basis of the recommendation made by State Director General of Police and for reasons mentioned above, the competent authority has decided to transfer the case to CBI, the release said. The gist of the case and status reports have also been submitted to CBI, it added.
As the victim hailed from East Kameng district, the All East Kameng District Students Union (AEKDSU), along with several organisations including All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union, North East Students Organisation and All Nyishi Students Union had taken out a peace march at Itanagar on Monday. They threatened to impose an economic blockade in Tawang district if the authorities failed to address their demand within 15 days.
We want the Government to hand over Tokos case to CBI, arrest the culprits at the earliest and terminate the police personnel who were deployed on control room duty during the incident, AEKDSU had said.
